Kansas Day January 29

Kansas Day is a holiday in the state of Kansas in the United States. It is celebrated annually on January 29 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1861 admission of Kansas into the Union. It was first celebrated in 1877 by schoolchildren in Paola. 

Annual Kansas Day celebrations include school field trips and special projects to study the history of Kansas, pioneer-style meals, special visits by students to the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka, Kansas, performances of Home on the Range, the Kansas State Song, and special proclamations by the Governor of Kansas and members of the Kansas Legislature.

Who Remembers Jimmy Durante

Who remembers Jimmy Durante? Well I sure do! I remember my parents enjoyed watching his humor on tv. I thought he was funny myself but what I remember most is how well he could play the piano. The ragtime music was so fun and that's what he loved to do. Well today marks the date of his death. January 29, 1980~

James Francis Durante (February 10, 1893 – January 29, 1980) was an American singer, pianist, comedian, and actor. His distinctive clipped gravelly speech, New York accent, comic language-butchery, jazz-influenced songs, and prominent nose helped make him one of America's most familiar and popular personalities of the 1920s through the 1970s. He often referred to his nose as the Schnozzola(from the German Schnauze [nose]), and the word became his nickname.

Early career

Durante dropped out of school in seventh grade to become a full-time ragtime pianist. He first played with his cousin, whose name was also Jimmy Durante. It was a family act, but he was too professional for his cousin. He continued working the city's piano bar circuit and earned the nickname "Ragtime Jimmy", before he joined one of the first recognizable jazz bands in New York, the Original New Orleans Jazz Band. Durante was the only member not from New Orleans. His routine of breaking into a song to deliver a joke, with band or orchestra chord punctuation after each line, became a Durante trademark. In 1920 the group was renamed Jimmy Durante's Jazz Band.

Jimmy Durante was the first white bandleader to feature black musicians in his live band, such as Achille Baquet, who played and recorded in Durante's Original New Orleans Jazz Band (1918–1920).

Corn Chip Day is on it's Way

National Corn Chip Day is on it's way everyone. This Food Holidays is celebrated on January 29th each and every year in the United States. 

Now this holiday is always celebrated by eating corn chips with a variety of dips / but don't confuse this holiday with National Chip and Dip Day. National Chip and Dip Day occurs in the United States annually on March 23. Tostitos-brand tortilla chips, a major U.S. brand, observed the day in 2015 by providing coupons for free dip for interested customers named "Chip". ha!

Now.... just so you know. There is a difference between corn chips and tortilla chips. We always get them confused because they are both a corn-based chip. A real corn chip is pictured above. We talk a little bit about the difference below.

Corn-Based Chips:
Chips and salsa, typically served using tortilla or corn chips is a common type of chips and dip dish that gained significant popularity in the United States in the late 1980s. Chips and guacamole, also typically served with corn-based chips is another type, as well as chips and bean dip. Seven-layer dip and tortilla chips is another corn-based chip combination, as is chile con queso, an appetizer or side dish of melted cheese and chili pepper typically served in Tex-Mex restaurants as a sauce for nachos.

About the Corn Chip:

A corn chip is a snack food made from cornmeal fried in oil or baked, usually in the shape of a small noodle or scoop. Corn chips are thick, rigid and very crunchy. Corn chips have the strong aroma and flavor of roasted corn, and are often heavily seasoned with salt. 

In the US, Fritos is one of the oldest and most widely recognized brands of corn chips.

While corn chips and tortilla chips are both made from corn, the corn in tortilla chips is subjected to the nixtamalization process, resulting in a milder flavor and aroma, and a less rigid texture. Tortilla chips also tend to be larger, thinner, and less salty than corn chips.

Corn chips are usually eaten alone or with a chip dip. They are a common ingredient in homemade and commercial party mix. In the Southwestern US, a popular dish, Frito pie, is made with corn chips and chili. In some areas, it is popular to pour the chili into a bag of corn chips and eat the mixture directly from the bag.

January 29, 2012

I love the quiet time of the morning. All is still. The only sound I hear is chimes lightly blowing on the patio and the flames of the fire. 

I'm enjoying my first cup of coconut coffee with whipped cream on top. I made a cherry-coconut cake yesterday so I'm having a small slice of that too. I've posted a picture here on the left. As you can see, it's a sheet cake. I usually like to drizzle a bit of chocolate on top but I didn't have any this go-round so I had to settle for only cherries-and-coconut. It's the first cake I've made since we moved and it felt good to bake again.  - - - With laptop in hand I can't think of a better morning before sunlight. Now here's the holidays & Events for the day.

Holidays & Observances

• The most notable reason for celebration on this day belongs to the Sherlock fandom. The 29th of January marks the day on which Sherlock Holmes and John Watson were introduced through Mike Stamford.

• National Corn Chip Day - "Corn chips are most often eaten alone or with a chip dip." "They are a common ingredient in homemade and commercial party mix." "In the Southwestern US, a popular dish is made by adding chili to a bag of corn chips and eating the mixture from the bag."

• National Carnation Day - is celebrated each and every year in America on January 29th. Many are not aware that the carnation is the "Birth Flower" for those born in the month of January.

• World Leprosy Day - observed internationally on January 30 or its nearest Sunday to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen's Disease. This day was chosen in commemoration of the death of Gandhi, the leader of India who understood the importance of leprosy. Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded diseases in the world. It is an infectious chronic disease that targets the nervous system, especially the nerves in the cooler parts of the body - the hands, feet, and face.
