Party Food / Ham Roll Ups

When you need something fast that looks fancy~

Hi everyone, if you need something fast that looks fancy, then go for the ham roll ups. This is finger food that's fast to make and is perfect for a wine party planned for a few guests. The picture above shows ham rolled up with a filling inside then tied off with green onion.

Let's talk about the green onion~

The green onion is used to hold the roll together but if you use really thin ham, you can roll it up without needing a onion to hold it. But the onion looks beautiful and tastes great with a cheese filling inside the roll up. Now another great thing about using onion is this.... if the guest doesn't want to eat onion then they can simply leave it on the plate. This is just an easy way to add onion without adding onion. lol~

Now let's talk about the Filling Inside~

The filling put inside ham roll ups are usually a cream cheese spread that's flavored with things like onion, chives, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber etc. This is the most popular filling that people just absolutely love. But at your party you could go with 2 different filling if you want to give your guests an option. You could go with a different cheese spread like pimento cheese spread.

A great way to get your mind to thinking about spread ideas is to research tea sandwich spreads. Tea sandwich spreads are used a lot in ham roll ups. Yep they sure are! Also research party cheese balls. Many cheese ball recipes will work fantastic used as a filling for ham roll ups. Some of those even include chopped nuts. Now a favorite one that I love to use is pineapple. Oh yes! Pineapple, ham and cream cheese goes fantastic together. It would be your sweet roll up.

Offer your guest a sweet option & a savory option.

Everybody's taste buds move from sweet to salty to sweet to salty so its nice to offer your guests both but you don't have too. Just know that cream cheese filling works great for both options. As I mentioned about pineapple works great as a sweet option but so does cherries. Ham roll ups; a simple idea that looks like you spent a lot of prep time on it but it really pulls together really fast. And if your serving wine... well we all know how wine and cheese goes perfect together so you can't miss. This will be a treat for your guests.

You can make these the day before

Another great thing that I love about this is... you can make these the day before and just put them in the refrigerator for the flavors to meld together. You don't have to be in a hurry to get the job done. Make them a day or 2 before and seal them in a container. You will be good to go. If you're a person that's pushed for time this takes a lot of weight off your shoulders.

My Closing Thoughts~

  • 😁 I just wanted to share a simple idea for everyone because I know that people experience hard times but want to offer something special to their friends. You may not have the budget to do a full spread of party food. But a wine party is low key and is perfect for a get together that doesn't require a lot of food. Ham roll ups, wine and a bowl of olives, maybe a bowl of nuts for. You're done! Enjoy your guests.

Use up leftover spiral ham for hot Croque-monsieur sandwiches

April 15
Today celebrates National Glazed Spiral Ham Day - an unofficial food holiday celebrated annually on April 15th.
So that means there's going to be a lot of people out there eating spiral hams today. (not to mention the fact that ham is a meat choice for many Easter celebrations.)
But what about the left-overs?
Well I like to make hot Croque-monsieur sandwiches with my left-overs. Instead of putting the cheese on the inside and toasting or frying it like a grill cheese sandwich... put the cheese on the top of the sandwich and melt it on top. Eat it with a fork and eat it hot! These sandwiches are just perfect for breakfast, lunch or supper because you can change it up so easy.
A croque-monsieur is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. From what I could find out it originated in French cafes and bars as a quick snack. Most people use Emmental or Gruyere cheese which is melted on top. Now if your going to eat this for breakfast and put an egg on top then the sandwich is called a croque-madame.
There's all kinds of versions:
  • croque provençal (with tomato)
  • croque auvergnat (with bleu d'Auvergne cheese)
  • croque gagnet (with Gouda cheese and andouille sausage)
  • croque norvégien (with smoked salmon instead of ham)
  • croque tartiflette (with sliced potatoes and Reblochon cheese)
  • croque bolognese / croque Boum-Boum (with Bolognese sauce)
  • croque señor (with tomato salsa)
  • croque Hawaiian (with a slice of pineapple)
Wikipedia says The sandwich's first recorded appearance on a Parisian café menu was in 1910. Its earliest mention in literature appears to be in volume two of Proust's In Search of Lost Time in 1918.

Glaze Recipes
For those of you who are glazing a spiral ham today there's 6 glaze recipes at the bottom of this cute little Easter fact sheet.
Mark your calendar... here's a holiday to remember

Robinson (Jackie) Day - April 15
Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated throughout Major League Baseball (MLB) in honor of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play professional baseball in the MLB. In the first half of the 20th century, baseball was segregated. Robinson and other African Americans played in the Negro Leagues, but discrimination prevented them from playing in the MLB. On April 15, 1947, Robinson played his first professional game for the Brooklyn Dodgers... resource
