National Love Your Pet Day

National Love Your Pet Day is celebrated every February 20th in the United States. Now from everything I've read, this is the day we remember our pets in a special way and show our love for them. We mark it on our calendar as a special bonding time just for our pets.

Thepetwiki site says "it's a day similar to Valentine's Day." Although we love our pets everyday it's good to have a day to focus on the relationship we have for our furry family members. It's a day to bring happiness into the home all in celebration of Love Your Pet Day.

Wikipedia says "Pets provide their owners (or "guardians") both physical and emotional benefits. Walking a dog can provide both the human and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction. Pets can give companionship to people who are living alone or elderly adults who do not have adequate social interaction with other people."

It is widely believed among the public, and among many scientists, that pets probably bring mental and physical health benefits to their owners.

Origin of this Holiday
My research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day.  It is possible this holiday may of been created by the greeting card industry like many Unofficial holidays are. But... I could not find reference to that either. I did find however, pet related cards you can send based on pets. 123Greeting

This holiday is referred to as a "National" day-
However, I did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. Even though I didn't, this is still a holiday that is publicized through social media to celebrate.  So enjoy the day and have fun with it.

Recognition about this holiday from:
calendar sites and personal Internet sites that blog and share information about this holiday. Many of these blogs talk about their pets and wish everyone a Happy Love Your Pet Day. Other's give examples of how they are spoiling their pet for the day. And many pet lovers will be posting pictures today of their beloved pets.

Gorilla the cat!
I thought I would get in on "Love your Pet Day" and post a couple of pictures of me and my male cat Gorilla. "My Heart My Heart My Heart"!

I have a great love for all animals and you will find that I post a lot of personal pictures of my pets all throughout my blog.

I hope you do take the time to show your pet some affection today. Do something for your pet that you know they would love. A new pet toy perhaps? A new fluffy bed perhaps? A new sweater perhaps? Or how about a pack of treats!!! The biggest thing is to show your pet some love today. Have some cuddles that will make them feel really special. They love it!  Happy National Love Your Pet Day Everyone!

Today's Featured Picture is an Odd-Eyed Cat /

In honor of February being Cat Health Month I wanted to do a fun "Featured Picture" of a cat. On my search for the best one, I found this photo by Keith Kissel. His odd-eyed cat picture was picked to be a featured photo for wikipedia today and I knew immediately I found the one I was going to post in honor of National Cat Health Month. It's just Beautiful! Have fun reading a few fun facts about odd-eyed cats too.

What is an Odd-eyed cat?

An odd-eyed cat is a cat with one blue eye (the "odd" eye) and one green, yellow, or brown eye. This is a feline form of complete heterochromia, a condition also present in humans and some other animals (including horses and huskies). It can occur in a cat of any fur color, provided that it possesses the white spotting gene. Animals affected by the condition can have partial heterochromia, in which only part of the iris is a different color.

Cultural reactions and folklore

Odd-eyed cats are popular within several breeds, including Turkish Van, Turkish Angora, Sphynx, Persian, Oriental Shorthair, and Japanese Bobtail.
In 1817, the government of Turkey, in conjunction with the Ankara Zoo, began a meticulous breeding program to preserve and protect pure white Turkish Angora cats with blue and amber eyes, a program that continues today, as they are considered a national treasure. The zoo specifically prized the odd-eyed Angoras who had one blue eye and one amber eye, as the Turkish folklore suggests that "the eyes must be as green as the lake and as blue as the sky." The mascot of the 2010 FIBA World Championship, hosted by Turkey, was an anthropomorphized odd-eyed Van Cat named, "Bascat".
Muhammad's pet Angora, Muezza, was reputed to be an odd-eyed cat.
In the Japanese Bobtail, odd-eyed cats are most frequently found in calico individuals.

  • Animal Holidays

In honor of all Animal Holidays This is a short video of "Jasper the raccoon" playing with a cat toy in the back yard of the cottage. Raccoons play just like cats do and it's so much fun to watch! Jasper is a wild animal and not a pet, but does come to visit and play with my cats frequently. And "No" Jasper is not in a pen. My cats are house cats and not allowed to run loose- so I have a pen for my cats where they can come and go- in and out of the house as they please, but can't go outside of the pen. I'm taking the video from inside the cats pen. :) Little Jasper is known for sitting by the pen and watching the cats play with their toys. Sooner or later Jasper starts reaching through the fence trying to get in on the fun. Many times he/she (I don't know if it's a girl or a boy raccoon) is lucky enough to steel away a toy as you see from the video; and he/she plays up a storm. I love all animals and it's a joy to watch them :)
