International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day February 23

February 23 is International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day which is celebrated all around the world. It's also know as National Dog Biscuit Day in the United States. On this day it's traditional to spoil your dog with dog biscuits.

A dog biscuit is a hard biscuit-based dietary supplement for dogs or other canines, similar to human snack food.

Dog biscuits tend to be hard and dry. Dog biscuits may be sold in a flat bone-shape. Some manufacturers claim the dry and hard biscuit texture helps clean the dog's teeth, promoting oral health.

However, I did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. Even though I didn't, this is still a holiday that is publicized through social media to celebrate.  So enjoy the day and have fun with it.

The History of the Dog Biscuit Industry

By most accounts, the history of the industry begins with a man named James Spratt. An electrician from Cincinnati, Spratt had patented a new type of lightning conductor in 1850. Later in the decade, he traveled to England to sell it. According to industry lore, he had a quayside epiphany in London when he saw a group of dogs eating discarded hardtack, the cheap, tough biscuits carried on ships and known to sailors as "molar breakers." The first major chunk of today's pet industry was born.

In 1860, still in England, Spratt unveiled Spratt's Patent Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes, a combination of wheat, beetroot, vegetables, and beef blood. Before long, he had competitors with names like Dr. A. C. Daniels' Medicated Dog Bread and F. H. Bennett's Malatoid Dog Biscuits. The products embraced the dubious science and the lightly regulated hucksterism of their era. (2009)

Dog Bark Recipe

I was surfing the Internet for dog treat recipes and this is what I found by Betty crocker. I've made plenty of homemade dog biscuits over the years but I've never made dog bark before. We'll see how it turns out.

Dog Bark Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

5 slices bacon
2 slices Cheddar cheese (3/4 oz each)
2 cups carob chips
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter

DIRECTIONS:

1. Line cookie sheet with foil. Spray lightly with cooking spray.

2. In 12-inch skillet, cook bacon over low heat 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Coarsely chop bacon; set aside.

3. Using 1 1/4-inch small dog bone cookie cutter, cut 15 dog bone shapes out of cheese slices. Set aside.

4. In medium bowl, microwave carob chips uncovered on High 30 seconds; stir. Microwave 30 seconds longer. Stir in peanut butter.

5. Spread carob mixture on foil to 1/4-inch thickness, about a 9-inch square. Immediately sprinkle with bacon and cheese; press lightly into carob mixture. Chill until set, about 15 minutes in freezer, or 30 minutes in refrigerator.

6. Remove from foil; break into 18 pieces. Store in airtight container in refrigerator for 5 days.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Puppy Treats Recipe

Celebration Food: Woof woof! This post is all about dogs and pumpkins. Did you know the month of October is National Adopt a dog month? And did you know October is also National Pumpkin month too? Well in honor of that, we picked a Betty Crocker recipe for dogs that has a whole can of pumpkin in it.  Give it a try and remember to make these special treats for other National Dog Holidays too. Last but not least, National Cook for your pet day is November 1st.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Puppy Treats Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

• 3 cups brown rice flour
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/4 cup peanut butter
• 2 eggs
• 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat oven to 350° F. In large bowl stir all ingredients until soft dough forms.

2. Divide dough in half. Using brown-rice-floured rolling pin, roll each dough half to 1/2 inch thickness on brown-rice-floured surface. Cut with 3-inch cookie cutter. On ungreased cookie sheet, place cutouts about 1 inch apart.

3. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until dry and golden brown. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

4. Store in dog treat jar at room temperature up to 1 week. For longer storage keep in refrigerator or freezer.

Tip: To dress up your puppy treats, melt 1 cup yogurt chips (available at pet stores) and 1 teaspoon vegetable oil in microwavable bowl uncovered on High about 1 minute or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Drizzle over puppy treats.

Tip: Check with your vet to make sure that these puppy treats fit into your dog's diet. Be sure to check the recipe for any known foods or ingredients your pet may be allergic to.
