Bread Rolls in Honor of National Bread Month

cyclonebill creativecommonslicense
I must admit I have a real weakness for bread & butter and I'm completely lost if I don't have it to eat along with my meals. I always get excited when Bread Month rolls around because I know I'm going to find bread recipes I've never tried before.

Bread Roll Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) lukewarm milk
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 3 cups (360g) unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled

  • Procedure

    1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the milk and add the sugar. In another bowl, sift the flour and salt together and add the cooled melted butter.
    2. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, and turn out onto a floured counter and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm, draft free place to 45 minutes.
    3. Turn dough out onto the freshly floured board and shape into 9 balls. Place dough balls into a buttered and floured 9 inch square pan. Let them sit, covered for another 15 minutes to rise again. Preheat the oven to 425° F (220 C).
    4. Bake for 15-20 minutes until browned and puffed. Split open and serve warm.

    Bread Machine Dinner Rolls Recipe

Not only do we celebrate National Bread Month in the month of November but we also celebrate National Bread Machine Baking Month in the month of January. November 17 is Homemade Bread Day too. So I've picked Bread Machine Dinner Rolls by Betty Crocker Recipes in honor of these holidays.

    1/4 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons bread machine or active dry yeast
Butter or margarine, melted, if desired

    Directions:

    1. Measure carefully, placing all ingredients except melted butter in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Dough/Manual cycle. Do not use delay cycle.

    2. Remove dough from pan, using lightly floured hands. Cover and let rest 10 minutes on lightly floured surface.

    3. Grease large cookie sheet with shortening. Divide dough into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Cover and let rise in warm place 30 to 40 minutes or until double. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)

    4. Heat oven to 375°F. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Brush tops with melted butter. Serve warm, or cool on wire rack.
