What is that paper bootie thing placed at the end of turkey drumsticks?

Do you celebrate with turkey during the holidays?  If so, this page will answer that often-asked question: "What is that paper bootie thing placed at the end of turkey drumsticks?"

Turkey Frills are paper Frills or 'booties ~

Turkey Frills are paper frills or 'booties' that are placed on the end of turkey or other poultry drumsticks to make a beautiful presentation of the food. The products are called "paper frills" or turkey frills. They are available at supermarkets or through stores and/or their respective web sites. The size varies to fit different types of bird." You can even place frills on pork chops!

Turkey Frills became popular because it was thought meat looked better if the knotty end of the bone was covered up- so the paper frills were invented.

Turkeys are sometimes decorated with turkey frills prior to serving:

  • Do not cook turkey with the frills on!
  • Turkey Frills are placed on after the turkey is cooked! If you place them on the bird while cooking, it will catch on fire!
  • Turkey Frills are placed on a cooked turkey for an elegant presentation.

Can you make paper frills if you can't find them in stores? Yes!

  • Step 1: Cut one 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of white printer paper in half.
  • Step 2: Fold each piece of paper in half.
  • Step 3: Hold both folded papers together and cut equally spaced strips on the folded side. Try to cut each frill the same depth and length, keeping up to 1/2" away from the end of the folded paper. If it's off a bit, don't worry- I will still turn out great :)
  • Step 4: Fluff out the frill! Open each frilled paper and fold in the opposite direction to add fullness to the frills.
  • Step 5: Then wrap each handmade frill around each cooked turkey leg and use a child safe glue stick to secure.

Dress up any dinner party with paper frills!

Paper Frills can be placed on any type of poultry drumsticks! Put them of chicken or even individual servings of cornish hens or quail :)  It makes a beautiful dinner plate.

Potato Chip Cookies Recipe

The first week in December is National Cookie Cutter Week and December 4 is Cookie Day. And most of you probably already know December is the most popular month for Cookie Exchange Parties too. Now with cookie exchanges and the holiday season too; we all like to show off our neat recipes to our family & friends. Today I'm posting my personal photos and recipe for Potato Chip Cookies that's just perfect for gift giving.

Potato Chips in Cookies??
Yes! This is a favorite cookie recipes because it's so unusual and so fast to make. And the neat thing is, there's no eggs, water or milk in these cookies! I've made them for years, they cook up to be very crunchy with the pecans & potato chips. If you enjoy foods that are sweet & salty at the same time, then you will love these cookies! They are just that.... very sweet and lightly salty.

Cookies as Gifts:
Ohhh yessss!  You gotta love this one!  This recipe is excellent for a bagged gift or even a gifts-in-a-jar. The reason I say that is because it's so easy to make the cookies all the same size by pushing down with the bottom of a jar. I put a video about it some time ago on youtube so please feel free to go watch.

This recipe is absolutely perfect for gift giving. This cookie is not the every-day-of-the-mill cookie so giving it makes it fun and special. Everybody loves the uncommon cookie & I'm sure you'll love it too.

Make your cookies thick. The dough doesn't flatten out during cooking like many recipes do. They hold their shape in cooking & stay really thick. Their uniform size makes it easy to pack in bags or jars.

Cookie Cutter Fudge Gift

It's Christmas, everyone is expecting fun food and everyone is always looking for new gifting ideas too. Well I found this great idea for gifting fudge from Betty Crocker. This is a fabulous idea and Oh so easy too! Happy Cookie Cutter Week everyone! This is one idea I'm going to do myself.

Betty Crocker says "Here's a sweet gift for someone with everything. Place cookie cutters & fudge into cellophane gift bags, & tie with ribbons." Well I think that's a fabulous idea. I think it would also be fun to place a dozen of them in a flat box, you know like a candy box. How fun would that be to open a box of 12 different cookie cutters filled with homemade fudge! You could even use the cutters for brownies or cookies too.Wow I would love for someone to give me this as a gift myself. Really...

If you know someone who collects cookie cutter; this would be a great gift idea for them.

For A Dinner Dessert Idea:  Try serving your after dinner dessert in a over sized cookie cutter and let your guests eat it out of the cutter with a spoon. Then tell the guests they get to keep the cookie cutter as a parting gift. Great idea right! :) I love it!

This post is in honor of National Cookie Cutter Week which is celebrated the 1st week of December. We Blogged it here-

Fun with Butternut Squash Pear Bisque and Fish Crackers

Fun With Food! Yes! Last night I was surfing around pinterest looking for some food fun that would be perfect for a cold rainy night and I found this photo of Butternut Squash and Pear Bisque. Along with the recipe for both the bisque and the fish crackers.

Now I was thinking... this would be a fantastic idea for little girls learning to cook in the kitchen. I have 4 great nieces that would just love making this.

My family spends lots of time on the river so these cute little fish crackers would make a lot of familiar fish giggles for sure.

I think having kids involved... in the making of something like crackers for soup would be a fun way to get them to eat some healthy soup. I even like the idea of the soup/bisque in the coffee mugs too. I think this is the best idea yet for little hands being able to grip and hold. Ohhh and the fish cracker on the end of a cane pole! Just genius! When I invite the girls over I'm going to say... "Come on girls lets go fishing in the mud hole!"

Not only would the kids learn to cook but they would have a wonderful food craft day too. I mean who could resist a day of cutting out crackers with fish cookie cutters? Then drawing the fish faces and fish scales on. :)

The idea of sharing this little project with the girls sounds like something right in the middle of my river bed too! Gosh even the boys would like this food project. I can just see the kids now. A day of soup making and cracker crunching sounds like a fine way to enjoy a cold rainy night to me.

Hurray for "Food Fun!"
Remember this great idea for National Soup Month & National Soup Swap Month in January, National Bread Month in November, National Pear Month in December and fun outdoor teas. Fish crackers would be a fun food gifts too. Dads would love it! Fishermen would love it! And what a fun idea to take to someone sick in bed. These little fishies would surely bring a smile to their face.
