I remember Mothers Tomato Gravy on Buttermilk Biscuits

Growing up eating tomato gravy

Southern Homemade Biscuits and Tomato Gravy was a popular meal at our house growing up. In fact, it was one of my favorite meals.  I couldn't hardly wait for Daddy's tomatoes to get big and ripe so we could pick them from the vine for Mothers fresh tomato gravy.

Mother and Daddy would always "Can" lots of tomatoes along with other things from the garden; to hold us over for the winter. We would always have that fresh tomato taste for soups, stews, and swiss-steak; just to name a few. In the winter she would even open a jar of canned tomatoes to make us winter tomato gravy too!  Add a trickle of golden eagle syrup on top of the biscuits & tomato gravy and you're in heaven!

In the South we grew up on eating lots of fried foods such as fried chicken and fried pork chops, or foods in general that was cooked in a lot of lard or oil.  We also grew up on eating homemade biscuits with most of our meals because it is very common to sop your bread in all the grease and gravies the foods are cooked in.  A lot of finger licking goes on in the South!

These photos are from many years agocan also be found on youtube.com
and I am so glad that I still have them. It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you my Mother, the Home Cook featured in this cooking video. Watch as she makes homemade tomato gravy! This very kitchen is the kitchen we children grew up eating her delicious Southern food. I sure wish she was still with us. How much I do miss her.

What is Tomato Gravy?
  • Tomato Gravy is is a gravy made from canned tomatoes, diced vine tomatoes or canned stewed tomatoes; flour, usually a large amount of fat to a small amount of fat. This is a Southern U.S. dish.

  • Tomato gravy, which is distinct from the term as used by northeastern Italian Americans when referring to tomato sauce, is a gravy common in most rural areas where tomatoes were a staple food. Tomato gravy is prepared in a method similar to white gravy. The cooked tomatoes, some fat (usually cured pork fat) and flour are cooked together until thick, and seasoned with salt and pepper. Typically, tomato gravy is served over eggs, toast and biscuits.
