How To Celebrate National Stuffed Mushroom Day

National Stuffed Mushroom Day is celebrated annually on February 4th in the United States.

Guys I love mushrooms! I eat them at least twice a week either raw on salads or cooked as a topping over steak or chicken. I also slice them up in my spaghetti sauce and cook them in my beef gravies too. I have no problem saying this is one holiday that I plan on enjoying by fixing and eating stuffed mushrooms.

Below I share a few fun fact's and yummy ways to enjoy this food holiday. I've listed everything from party ideas to serving suggestions too. Have fun reading as you learn "How to celebrate National Stuffed Mushroom Day."

How to Celebrate this holiday:
  • 1st Let's Learn what a stuffed mushroom is: Stuffed mushrooms is a dish prepared using edible mushrooms as its primary ingredient. Myriad fillings can be used, and the dish is typically baked or broiled. It can be served hot or at room temperature, and is sometimes served cold. The dish can have a meaty texture, and serves as an hors d'oeuvre, side dish, or snack.

  • Preparation Tips: Preparation typically involves washing the mushrooms and removing the stems, after which the caps are turned over and stuffed with various fillings. The removed stems can be chopped really fine and used as in ingredient in the filling.

  • Filling ingredients used are diverse: can include bread crumbs, spinach, tomato, grated cheese, cream cheese, onion, garlic, herbs such as basil, chives, tarragon and parsley, meats such as sausage, pork, bacon, salmon, egg, spices, salt and pepper. The filling can be sautéed prior to being placed in the mushroom caps. The dish can be drizzled with olive oil prior to cooking. The dish can have a meat-like texture.  -- The photo to the right is mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese, bacon and thyme.
  • Tips On Cooking: The Internet says stuffed mushrooms are typically placed on a cooking pan or dish and baked or broiled to cook the dish. They can also be cooked on skewers, and can be cooked on a rotisserie. ~"Personally I like to stuff them then cook them in butter and wine on top of the stove until they shrink some. Then I finish them off in the oven which melts any cheese I have on top and browns and crisps up any bread crumbs I have on top too."

  • Helpful Fact: The mushrooms shrink during the baking process so you may have to adjust your filling.

  • Serving: The dish is typically served hot or at room temperature, and can also be served cold.

  • Host a Party to celebrate this holiday! I think it would be fun to host a mushroom stuffing party. You could have each of your guests bring something different that could be used to stuff the mushrooms with. Make several different kinds and enjoy them on party trays. Serve some great drinks  with it and have fun.

  • Game: Make up a fun mushroom tossing game. Be a kid again and draw a face on a piece of cardboard and cut the mouth out. Take turns trying to ring the mouth with the mushrooms. Better yet use each others mouths to catch them.

  • Invite your guest the quick way: 123Greetings has a nice list of free Internet invitations you can send too.

  • Always give away a door prize at your party. A easy idea is a basket of raw mushrooms. If it's a simple get together and not a party... then give simple recipe cards for your friends to take home with them.
